Not Myself

Live in Boulder, CO 2001
Speech during performance of "Not Myself"

I have a pretty small group of friends, and of that small group of friends there are two types of the friends that I have. And there's the type of friend who when I need a ride to the airport I'll call them up and go, Hey I need a ride to the airport. And they'll go, Cool, cool, What time you leave? And I'll go, I leave at 7:30 in the morning. And they'll go, hm, I'll tell you what, why don't you ask around and if you can't find anyone I'll take you to the train station or something. Get you to the airport. We'll leave five hours early, that's fine.

And then there's the friends that you call and you say, I need a ride to the airport, and they say what time, and you say 7:30 in the morning, and they say, I'll call you and wake you up at six. And this song is for the people who would take me to the airport.

This is a song from a record that I put out way back in 2001. Back when I was just a young little lad. And it makes more sense to me now than it ever has. It's for friends. It's a song about friends. It's not about love, it's about friendship.

This is a song that I don't usually play all the time, but I should. If I had four hour shows, I would play this one every night. It's from the Room For Squares record and, it's interesting, it's just hiding in there. It's just hiding in there.
