December 2017 Twitter Q&A

Twitter Q&A session

I’m feeling the right balance of left/right brain, sincerity/levity. Q&A time. Hit me.

A new artist that you discovered recently?

Phoebe Bridgers. She’s phenomenal. Thanks @shannonwoodward

Least favorite key to play/sing in?

F

[Question missing]

Q&As.

how do you usually apologize for being wrong?

On the spot. Also I have stopped with contingency apologies. “I’m sorry if I was a little ____ last night.” Trust in other people’s right to tell you they’re upset. And then live like no news is good news.

[Question missing]

Comedy. It works exactly like music. Except with comedy, I can hear the notes but I can’t sing em like I want to. But the synaptic game is *exactly* the same.

What is one thing you never understood?

That you sleep next to someone  for years and then one day you can’t anymore. My brain will never get it.

What are you learning right now on the guitar?

Breathing

What personal rule do you have?

Never joke in the absurdist negative.

[Question missing]

I’m thinking a lot about aging gracefully as an artist. The state of it? It’s just fine. As long as people are getting joy from what they hear, it can never be wrong. The kids are alllllright.

Favorite Paul Simon song and why?

‘Train in the Distance.” For several reasons, one being that it captures the entire “arc of a love affair” in one standard length song. It’s a movie. Perfectly written. Paul Simon is otherworldly.

Have you ever thought of adopting a child, if you don’t end up getting married and starting your own family? You be like Randall from This Is Us!

As I’ve grown up and embraced what life is really about, I have come to realize I don’t know the exact race, gender, or background of my future child/children. Hey universe - surprise me

how would you describe a deadhead to a non deadhead?

Imagine a guy named Alan. Your friend always brings him around, talking about all the cool stuff Alan said when you weren’t there. But Alan doesn’t really make eye contact with you. You may come to resent him. Then one day, when your car breaks down, someone pulls up. It’s Alan.

Let the record reflect that this is actually about the Dead’s music. The Dead is Alan. The Head is your friend.

do you know dua lipa ?

No I Dua not

how did you come up with the lyric “maybe this mattress will spin on its axis and find me on yours”

I was laying drunk and lovelorn on a floor and it was spinning. The rest is deep-track history.

What’s something your brain tries to make you do but you have to will yourself not to do it?

Devolve into a blob of selfishness

What do you wish you knew more about?

I wish I knew the exact meanings of fascism, communism, socialism, Marxism, etc. I just rely on context clues and nod along. Wow. That - that really felt liberating to admit. Okay, lots of love, gotta run. Alan just showed up.
