Dave Chappelle: We start in Austin, January 12th, me and Joe Rogan. You comin' through?
John Mayer: I'd love to if I can. I mean, I'm finishing up a record. That's the first I've mentioned of it. But I would love to try to come through. You kiddin'? I'd follow you anywhere.
DC: For those who don't know John Mayer, he's always "finishing up a record."
JM: [Laughs] That's true, I am. This was a weird year. I was finishing up one record, and then I decided I never want to finish that record. And then I started a whole new record, and I'm finishing that one.
DC: Wait, what do you mean you didn't want to finish it? You just didn't like it?
JM: I didn't like it. So I scrapped it.
DC: Do you ever revisit those things? Do you ever go back and say, "I like it," or no?
JM: You know what happens when I go back? I always realize I was right. Do you ever go back and see things, and go, "yeah, there's a reason this isn't out"? Are there any jokes? There must be a Chappelle Show sketch at some point that you kept trying to do and you went, "ah, it's not gonna hold up."
DC: Jokes are different. The world is like cartoon scenery. You can throw a joke away but they always come back around. If they want to exist, they gon' make you do 'em.
JM: That happens with songs. You'll think that you wrote a song on the spot. You'll go, I wrote a song on the spot! And when you think back on it, you're like, oh, no, those are the remnants of seven other ideas I had at other points in time.
